Zico, in his commentary on the performance of Neymar, emphasised that sheer talent is no longer enough for the superstar. Citing the numerous injuries Neymar has faced over the years, the iconic “Galinho” highlighted the necessity of thorough preparation before games. In this context, Zico drew a parallel by bringing up Sócrates as an example.
“It’s all about making a choice. To play at a high level in football, you have to forgo certain things […] Neymar is still performing at a high level. A player with that kind of talent can achieve so much. I’m rooting for him because I ire him a lot,” Zico stated during an interview with “Jornal dos Sports” on YouTube.
Despite the presence of Vinícius Júnior, Raphinha, and Rodrygo, Zico perceives Neymar as the only standout player for the Brazilian team. Owing to this elevated status, it’s widely acknowledged that the number 10 is aware of his position as a leader and a source of inspiration for his teammates. However, the dependency on the most talented player of this generation is strongly criticised.
“He is the only exceptional player to emerge in recent years. Of course, he is aware of his importance to the team. But it cannot rely solely on him. Neymar needs to be the cherry on top. He’s the one who will make the difference,” he continued.
At 33 years of age, Neymar no longer showcases the same physical prowess that he did during his prime years. The severe injuries he has faced in recent times have left their mark, requiring more careful attention to his body. According to Zico, a lavish lifestyle and habits that depart from the optimal preparation of an elite athlete could significantly influence his performance for both Santos and the Brazilian national team.
“Obviously, after suffering a major injury, you need to be cautious about other things, not just recovery. You have to take care of your body as a whole. There are certain aspects you need to pay more attention to.”
